KUPYANSK, Ukraine—For 48 hours in muddy trenches near this northeastern city, the Ukrainian troops had fought off waves of Russian infantry emerging from the tall grass, while artillery hammered everything around them. They were exhausted, and officers had finally ordered them to return to base with the six Russians they had taken captive. At 3 a.m., two Ukrainian soldiers and their commander set off with the prisoners, walking through a shattered tree line toward the evacuation point.

As snow fell silently in a secret location in eastern Ukraine, the Russian infantrymen huddled on a garage floor, their hands dirty and their faces exhausted. The men had been captured by Ukrainian troops during intense fighting for the city of Avdiivka. Now they waited to be sent to prisoner-of-war facilities, far from the front line.

BERDYCHI, Ukraine—Every day, groups of Russian infantry attack the tree lines and pockmarked fields east of this village, which block their push to surround the city of Avdiivka. Every day, Ukrainian troops cut most of them down. But more Russians keep coming. Depleted Ukrainian units can’t shoot them all.

KYIV, Ukraine—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned citizens to brace for a winter onslaught of Russian missiles aimed at knocking out power and heat, as Moscow seeks to capitalize on a shift in momentum in the war. The prospect of a second winter of bombardments adds to a darkening mood here. Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive failed to achieve a major breakthrough, despite thousands of casualties. The country’s top general has said the conflict is at risk of becoming a stalemate. A fresh aid package from the U.S. is tied up in Congress.

The two Soviet-era helicopters sped toward the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka just after dawn, flying 20 feet above the ground to keep the low-tech machines off radar. Three miles from the city, the Ukrainian pilots climbed to 100 feet and unleashed a volley of rockets onto several industrial buildings north of the city. As they headed back to the airfield, they got word that Russian jet fighters were racing toward them. They landed immediately to avoid being easy targets.
DNIPRO, Ukraine—Tetyana Dychko tried not to worry when her husband, freshly conscripted into the Ukrainian army, stopped responding to messages. Yuriy Synerub, a 38-year-old electrician, had warned he might lose the cellphone signal on the front lines, where he was dispatched late last year.
A monument honoring Russian poet Alexandr Pushkin in Kyiv, Ukraine, was removed last year. KYIV, Ukraine—When Russia first attacked Ukraine in 2014, Vadym Pozdnyakov was among a crowd that toppled a statue of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin in the city of Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine. Now, nearly a year into Russia’s full-scale invasion, he is leading a campaign with a new target: monuments to 19th-century Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin.
BAKHMUT, Ukraine—Oleksander Matviyenko, a junior officer in the Ukrainian army here on one of the most hotly contested front lines of the war, fights off Russian attacks with other defenders nearly every day. But they keep on coming. “We shoot at them, they send more. It doesn’t end,” said Lt. Matviyenko, 26, a yellow-and-blue Ukrainian flag patched onto his olive-green uniform. “There’s so many of them.”
KYIV, Ukraine—A few hours after a Russian cruise missile slammed into this city’s Shevchenko Park, locals were strolling with their dogs in the afternoon sunshine. A maintenance worker shooed people looking at the blast crater off the sidewalk, so he could clear leaves off the path. In the wake of the biggest attack on Ukraine’s capital since the first weeks of the war, Kyiv residents are still trying to live as normally as possible. The goal for the attack, residents said, was to frighten them into panic or surrender. By carrying on, they wanted to show that they wouldn’t be cowed.
